Patient Information > The Problem With Anemia
Many people with chronic (long-term) illnesses, such as cancer*, HIV infection, or renal disease, have a lack of energy or tire easily. There are many possible reasons for this type of feeling, but a common cause is a condition called anemia.
*See Full Prescribing Information. Anadrol-50 (oxymetholone) is contraindicated in: Carcinoma of the prostate or breast in male patients, and Carcinoma of the breast in females with hypercalcemia.
My doctor says I have anemia: What is it?
Red blood cells (also called erythrocytes) carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Anemia is a condition in which there is a shortage of red blood cells circulating in your body.
What happens when a person has anemia?
A person with anemia may have any of the following problems:
- Shortness of breath
- Loss of stamina
- Rapid heart rate
- Pale skin
- Pounding headaches
- Heart palpitations
Since these problems may be caused by conditions other than anemia, your doctor can order tests to study your red blood cells. These tests can determine if anemia is the cause of your symptoms.
How did I get anemia?
If you have anemia, it is important to determine its cause. Your doctor will carefully assess your overall health and determine the kind of anemia you have. Anemia can be due to many different causes, including exposure to harmful chemicals or strong medicines, undetected internal bleeding (such as from ulcers), infections, a diet low in certain nutrients (such as iron), genetic (inborn) conditions, and problems with your bone marrow (spongy material found inside many large bones that helps to produce red blood cells).
In people with chronic conditions, such as cancer, HIV infection, or renal disease, anemia can be caused by their illnesses or can be a result of treatments, such as strong medicines or radiation therapies, which interfere with the production of red blood cells. People with chronic conditions may also have problems with appetite or eating, which may result in low levels of iron in their diet, another cause of anemia.
